Once we tell a customer THIS WE LET THEM KNOW we’ve given them A valuable mason’s DEEP SECRET and that they are NOW barred from telling anyone else otherwise they will have to be sacrificed!
This statement is usually followed by giggles and the question “Why is that?” The answer is “Because of the power of the sun and the rotation of the earth.”
An observation our cat Noelle sleeps on the South Side of the house because it’s a warm place to be. The sun’s rays that penetrate through the window and provides warmth through a good portion of the area covered. Our beloved cat enjoys this phenomenon and was not educated at all in making this discovery.
Hence, we have since provided a “Blanket” in the spot which she has claimed to be her own.
One experiment that we can do right in the shop is to light a piece of incense in the North End of the shop and wait 5 minutes to see how the aroma travels. Going to the South End of the house the aroma doesn’t seem to reach well in that air space.
On the other hand lighting an incense on the South End of the shop and we get complaints from MOM to turn that thing (incense) off! Because it’s causing a stink throughout the whole place!! Nice scent distributing!
We also poke fun at Engineers, whom have too much education and being confined in a cube too long with their noses in the books oblivious to this now highly kept secret that used to be common sense at one time.
It’s amazing as to what we have forgotten in the generations that have passed.
Actually in the 1400’s if a stone chimney Mason were to construct a traditional wood burning fireplace with the chimney on the North Side of the house that Mason would likely be “tarred and feathered and drug through out the streets to be ridiculed as an Idiot.”
Today we have all but lost that common sense knowledge that only a fool would put a heating device on the North side of the house.
In our size ups of determining the heating needs we follow the "Southern Exposure Rule” and we have always come out ahead of our expectations with the results.
We feel our new found discovery of this simple fact should be shared and NOT KEPT AS A DEEP SECRET.
On one actual event a customer was complaining of being cold in her house. We relocated the chimney that a contractor had installed at the Northern End of her house to the most Southern End. Result? A HAPPY CUSTOMER!
